The miners' strike for jobs 1984-5
by Peter Arkell & Ray Rising
This unique first-hand account of the miners strike for jobs is published to mark the 25th anniversary of the dispute that changed Britain.
The authors were photographers during the strike, when the National Union of Mineworkers and pit communities confronted the Thatcher government and the state.
Drawing on new sources as well as their own experiences, Peter Arkell and Ray Rising draw out the significance of the longest-ever mass strike in British history.
They reveal how the Trades Union Congress and Labour Party leaders betrayed the strike and expose the role of the secret state in trying to undermine the NUM leaders.
Now that the economic and financial crash is joined by a deep political crisis within the British state, the opportunities are present for picking up where the miners were forced to leave off, the authors say.
Unfinished Business contains 80 vivid photographs which help bring this titanic struggle to life. Many of the photographs are published for the first time.

"This is a book of images showing events which we will never see the likes of again in our lifetimes. They show proud mining communities standing unbowed, they show the unity and strength of those who were part of a nationalised industry, and they show the lengths a capitalist government was willing to go to destroy their communities and their industries.
In my opinion this book is an excellent pictorial record of one of the most controversial years of mining history."

The Association organised what will be an annual, Stapleford Golf tournament that was played for on Wednesday 26th September on a fine sunny day at the Forest Golf Club. The course was in superb condition and so was the steak meal and desert that followed. The winners were presented with prizes by association Chairman Eric Eaton. The winner of the Nottinghamshire NUM Ex & Retired Miners Association Stapleford trophy was won by Honorary Association member Martin Lee of Martin Lee and partners solicitors of Mansfield. He went around the course and finished with 34 points, Martin said afterwards its the only thing I have won since being in the team that won the school football league when I was a youngster, the standard that these guys play at, was very good, and the whole day was most enjoyable, the trophy will have pride of place on my desk at work . The trophy was made by a local ex miner who turned the plinth out of a piece of solid Sherwood forest oak, and a miners workman's safety lamp sits on top.
Miners still working in the industry, and non association members played for a cut glass bowl trophy, these were Tim Orme, first with 34 points, second Mark Blacknell with 36 points and Third Ian Bakewell who plays off a five handicap and finished with 32 points.
A big thankyou from the Association to Ron Clurow for his organising of the tournament.
Coming a very close second was Kevin Stapleton with 33 points.

Third was ex Linby miner Tony Tucker Payne who is no stranger to the county golf scene having played at that standard for the last 30 odd years, he said it was great to see old mates again, I am sure the day will grow into something really big in the future.
